Somewhere in the World

"Somewhere in the world
something is happening
which will make its slow way here."

The first stanza of Linda Pastan's poem Somewhere in the World was the sentence that stuck with me after finishing the poem. Pastan recognizes something that most of the world does not: although it is happening across the world, it will somehow make its way here and affect others. It is human nature to believe that as long as the problem does not affect them personally, it does not exist. Or, if we ignore the problem, it will naturally go away, but Pastan understands that we are all vulnerable to the same problems and situations as everyone else.

  1. So true! We love to ignore anything that has not touched us, but we could be the ones to stop it if we cared. Human nature creates a selfish concern that makes our problems seem like the only ones in the world, yet we are offended when others blow off our issues. Great job!

  2. Could not agree more! If we just wished our problems way its not going to do anything. We need to face our problems head on. Having problems is essential for life. Without the trials and hardships how will we grow stronger in mind, body, and spirit?
